Certifications

MARPOL. Port de Mataró issues the official MARPOL Certification (Marine Pollution), which certifies the responsible management of waste generated by the owners of boats. MARPOL is a set of international standards whose purpose is the prevention of marine pollution caused by boats. This certificate is approved by the Maritime Authority and the Catalan Government.

Port de Mataró is a waste receptor center and it is able to issue the MARPOL official waste certificate, which certifies that the owners of the boats carry out responsible management of waste, recognised at an international level.

In order to obtain this certification, each time a user needs to dispose of waste, he/she must previously notify the Maritime Authorities or must arrange this discharge through the nautical companyies based in the port and homologated for this purpose. This way, each time a waste discharge is made following this procedure, the user receives an official certification. On presentation of all the receipts collected throughout the year, Port de Mataró issues the MARPOL certification proving the good management of the waste made by the user throughout the year.

Throughout the year, Consorci Port Mataró carried out a campaign recommending the use of water hoses with an automatic shut-off device, while providing all mooring users with a water gun free of charge.

Monitoring program for Posidonia oceanica meadows

Posidonia oceanica is a seagrass species that is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. It forms large underwater meadows, also called prairies. Mataró has one of the most important meadows in terms of extension, which is subject to other factors that can cause its regression: the port itself, trawling, industry, housing, beaches and wadis.

Consorci Port Mataró follows the monitoring program for Posidonia Oceania meadows as a protected area of Xarxa de Natura 2000 in front of the port.
